Fred Robbins signs with St. Louis Rams |
| By playerpress.com wire service | March 9, 2010 |
|
Defensive tackle Fred Robbins, a key member of the Giants defense the last six years, has left New York to sign a three-year contract with the St. Louis Rams.
Robbins, who will turn 33 later this month, was a leader of the defense in 2007 when the Giants won Super Bowl XLIV. Though injuries have slowed him the last two years, Robbins recorded 25 of his 28.5 career sacks with Big Blue.
The 6-4, 325-pound lineman completed a six-year, $20 deal with the Giants and became a free agent. He previously had played four years with the Vikings.
“I can’t thank all of the New York Giants fans enough for the support that they’ve shown me over the years, and now I look forward to hopefully helping to bring a Super Bowl victory to the fans of St. Louis,” Robbins said.
He adds size and versatility to the Rams’ defensive line with his ability to play both the 3-technique and nose-tackle positions. He will play for his former defensive coordinator with the Giants, Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo. |

Giants to Appear on Fallon |
| By playerpress.com wire service | November 17, 2009 |
|
New York Giants Dave Diehl, Fred Robbins and Danny Clark will appear on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on Tuesday night (actually Wednesday morning) at 12:35 a.m. EST on NBC.
The Giants are scheduled to play “Shock Absorber” with the comedian. In the game, everyone puts their hand on a button and presses it when a song ends. The last to press it receives a shock.
“It’s a mild shock,” Robbins said. “I’m happy to be a part of it. I’m looking forward to getting out there with my teammates on the show and having a good time.”
It will not be the first comedic appearance for Diehl, who appeared with the “12 Angry Mascots,” a sports themed sketch show, at the Comix Comedy Club in Manhattan prior to this season. |

Robbins Named Pro Bowl Alternate |
| By playerpress.com wire service | December 16, 2008 |
|
New York Giants defensive tackle Fred Robbins today was named second alternate at defensive tackle for the NFC Pro Bowl team.
Should two starters or reserves pull out of the game, which often happens, the 31-year-old Robbins, who is enjoying perhaps his best season for the reigning Super Bowl champion despite two broken hands and a serious shoulder injury, would make his first trip to Hawaii as a Pro Bowler.
Robbins, 31, a second-round draft pick by Minnesota in 2000 out of Wake Forest, has 5½ sacks this season, matching his career-high set in 2006 and ’07 despite missing two games thus far with a shoulder injury and playing through three other games with two broken hands. |

| Robbins Blocks FG in Giants Win |
| By playerpress.com wire service | November 16, 2008 |
|
Defensive tackle Fred Robbins pushed through the line and blocked a field goal in the second quarter of the New York Giants’ 30-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens today at Giants Stadium.
The block, on a 32-yard attempt by Matt Stover, was a key play despite the final score. The Giants led by only 7-0 at the time, and the block of what should have been an easy three points for Baltimore set up the team’s second touchdown. New York took over at the 33 and Brandon Jacobs later scored on his second 1-yard TD run for a 14-0 lead.
The Giants, now 9-1, led by only 20-10 late in the third quarter, the blocked field goal looming large until cornerback Aaron Ross intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to give the team some breathing room.
Robbins, a free agent signed from the Minnesota Vikings in 2004, has been playing with two broken hands. He already has tied his career high set the last two seasons with 5.5 sacks on the year. |

| Robbins Begins Pro Bowl Push |
| By playerpress.com wire service | October 24, 2008 |
|
The Giants are 5-1 and defensive tackle Fred Robbins is on his way to a career year.
Could his first Pro Bowl selection be far behind?
Robbins, in his ninth season in the NFL, has never been invited to the league’s Pro Bowl bash in Hawaii. But his subtle talents as a pass rusher and run stuffer were brought into focus on a national level last season, when Robbins sparked a defensive line that aided the Giants in its run through a four-game playoff sweep, culminating in a Super Bowl championship.
Robbins’ push in the middle of the defensive line opened gaps for defensive ends and linebackers to shoot through as the Giants smothered the Patriots and ended their hopes for an undefeated season in the Super Bowl. The pressure up the middle by Robbins, Barry Cofield and Jay Alford made sure that Pats quarterback Tom Brady was always under pressure, and forced to throw on the run the usually poised Brady was rendered largely ineffective.
Robbins has carried that momentum into this regular season.
He has 5½ sacks, equaling his career high—through only six games. As the Giants continue to harass quarterbacks despite the loss of superstar defensive end Michael Strahan to retirement and Pro Bowl end Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury, the media has started to pick up on the understated superstar in the middle of the line. Ends Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka still get most of the sacks and headlines, but a consensus is forming that it’s time for Robbins to receive Pro Bowl recognition for his unsung contributions.
His teammates already have recognized Robbins, naming him defensive captain for the season.
“That means a lot to me, that your teammates consider you a team leader and look up to you,” Robbins says. “Respect from your peers means a lot in this league. To know that they consider you a captain and a leader, you know you’re doing something right.” |
