St. Louis Rams one victory from playoffs after 1-15 2009
The St. Louis Rams are one victory away from a playoff berth -- just one year after a 1-15 season.
Budding superstar quarterback Sam Bradford and a young Rams defense sparked by veteran Fred Robbins led St. Louis to a 25-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in St. Louis.
The Rams improved to 7-8 and face the 6-9 Seattle Seahawks for the NFC West title on Sunday night in Seattle.
The Rams held the 49ers to one offensive touchdown, on a breakdown that allowed Michael Crabtree to catch a 60-yard touchdown pass from Troy Smith, as Robbins, a Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants after the 2007 season, recorded three tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery. The sack was late in the fourth quarter, at a key juncture.
For the season, Robbins, the leader of a very young Rams defense that also features Chris Long and James Laurinaitis, has a career-high six sacks, third on the team after James Hall (10) and Long (nine).
Robbins was drafted in the second round by the Minnesota Vikings in 2000.
